My Latest Tip
I spoke last week about 'footage', by measuring the length of the last putt you hit on each green, (the one that goes in) we can determine how good a putter you are over the course of a round and make it more definitive over a few rounds.
I have had a few people let me know their result, but I would like to get a bigger sample size to create a table matching handicap categories to the amount of feet holes in a round. As an incentive for you to make a note after each hole what you achieved, I am going to run a competition that is FREE to enter. We will have a male prize and a female prize of a dozen balls of your choice, the will be a handicap limit of 18 for both and you simply add your handicap to the total distance of putts holed over the 18 holes. The shortest putt you can register is a foot even if it's a 2" tap in and the longest is 10 feet, even if you are lucky enough to hole from further away.
If you have any questions, please let me know. I'm in the shop all day on Saturday and will be sat eagerly awaiting your numbers. The competition will run for the next three weeks and it doesn't have to be in a competition, it can be just over 18 holes.
It's Been Nearly A Year
At the end of this month, I would have completed my first year as Head Professional at Ringway and I would like to take this opportunity to firstly thank all the members for such wonderful support and kind words about the shop, stock, lessons and service we as a team are providing.
I would also like to thank my right hand man Sam, who has been on board now for four months and he has been a pleasure to work alongside. He is working hard on his own development with TPI and Personal Training, as well his development as a PGA Professional.
Rick and George are a perfect fit in the team, through their knowledge of the club and love for the game, they have both been a huge help in enabling the club to operate and both know the level of service the members here at Ringway deserve.
Finally, Ian Wrigley is a true asset as a long standing, highly regarded PGA Professional, who is still very active within the PGA, I have been able to learn a lot from and become a better Professional myself.
Working alongside Richie, Fiona, Peter, Gemma and the other members of the staff, round's off how fortunate I am.
The biggest highlights for me over the year I've been here is the success of Girls Golf Rocks, creating national recognition for Ringway and seven new junior girl members, This Girl Can which has created six new Associate members as well as huge recognition with England Golf and within Cheshire.
Working closely with Richie on development of the facilities, we are now ready to get an Academy course up and running on Ash Lane and already have a school coming down to host their own internal competition on it for the children.
Working with the committee, we are also ready to run a 9 hole Pro's Stableford multi day on a Thursday and Friday to offer Gold, Silver and Associate Members the chance to play a quick round of golf off forward tees that qualifies for handicap.
These are just some of the many highlights I have had, with lots more to come.

Get Yourself A Lesson
How good a putter you are and how many feet you hole will be in direct correlation with how close you hit it especially with chipping and pitching? Before we start testing, Sam and I will be laying out cones on both the practice ground and short game area for you to see how well you can control your distances and which clubs work best.
On the short game area. there will be a row of cones at 5 yard intervals starting at 10 yards up to 45 yards and the aim is to land 3 balls in between each of the cones with a particular club and then repeat again with a different club. You will find that some are easy than others and you will be better with certain clubs from certain distances. This should be 21 balls, the amount in a tube that can be picked up the pro shop. If we can make a conscious effort to fill the tube up and return it to the pro shop afterwards, then we can guarantee we have a tube ready for another member to practice with.
On Ash Lane, we will have circles of cones laid out for you to try and land the ball in between (not finish in between) at slightly longer distances and the circles will have a 12 foot diameter.
Good luck and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.
