Welcome to the latest edition of the weekly pro shop newsletter. The Open starts this week and we hope you are looking forward to it and get the chance to sit down and watch some of the action. A lot has gone on over the last couple of weeks that I need to catch you up on. Enjoy the read.

The Open Championship

It’s Open week and it’s a favourite time of the year for myself with the best golf competition in the year taking place. I must have had a bit of inspiration as I managed to win my Dunham Forrest match against Elsmere Golf Club 5&3 and more importantly the team winning 5-2.

Club news

St Ambrose & Altrincham prep schools competition

We held two school competitions on both the course and the driving range. The 10 holes created on Ash Lane were a huge success allowing completely new juniors golfers the chance to experience golf in a fun, safe environment playing holes ranging from 40-110 yards. Richie and I have worked hard on the lay out and a huge thank you to him and his team for their preparation on each of the days.

Going forward, we are looking to have the academy course open from 10pm - 12pm on a Wednesday for our new ladies and any member wishing to play it. Feel free to invite your family and friends down to play.

The schools, parents and boys had nothing but praise and have already re-scheduled for next year. Finally I would like to thank all the members that gave up their free time to help escort each group around and helping marking the scores.

Captains' away day

Last Friday, a group of 23 including the Captain went to Woodsome Hall Golf Club in Huddersfield and everyone had an overall great day. The clubhouse is probably one of the most unique I have been in, steeped in tradition along with a wonderful Court Yard. The course was in fantastic condition and a real challenge.

I played really well which was pleasing and was thoroughly entertained by Mr Captain, Ronnie Ballentyne and Frank McKenna making the day extra special. It was also great to see Mr President make the trip and out striding down the fairways.

Humphreys Scratch

The final big event to the year was our very own club championship the ‘Humphreys Scratch’.

We had great weather, a perfect golf course with a few tricky flags and an eager field. Scoring was tough and James Abbey was leading with a level par 71 after the first round with Mike Wallwork and Keith Jones hot on his heels with 72’s.

At the end of the two rounds Mike Wallwork prevailed with a second round 74 for a total of 146 with Keith Jones and Jack Kelsey tied for second one shot back.

O'neil Keefe Trophy

It was also the start of the O’Neil Keefe Trophy for the best amateur, a beautiful trophy donated by Martyn Grimley and the first winner of this was Tim Daggett with a nett 70 and 73 to win by one from Neil Hickson.

This day was made into a real club day with a fantastic BBQ put on by Lee with some great organisation from Claire Hudson, Gemma organising extra staff to have a downstairs bar and not to mention Paul Stockton who could go into event management with all he has done for the club.

I hope that those who got chance enjoyed the inflatable dart board and it was something different for golfers and none golfers to have some fun with. Well done the Rick Walmsley and Vince Sweeney for their bullseye shots!

It’s great to see one of our Girls Golf Rocks members winning the junior competition on Sunday, well done Amber.
