So how do we know what is best for you? 90% of what is out there has its place whether that be to suit your swing or shape of foot and even dare I say it on price! There are a range of reasons why one may be better than another and one of the reason that is a big determining factor is the sound and colour, this is especially the case with golf balls. A few years ago a test was done with tour professionals that they had to wear headphones whilst hitting unmarked golf balls and they couldn’t decipher between make and model. This is now the perfect time of year to try out different types of golf balls and clubs, so they feel right for the start of the season. A tip I would suggest that once you know which ball you are going to play, it is key you practice your short game with that ball and no others. We could get a robot to hit the same putt or chip with a range of different golf balls and we would see a range of different results. Therefore, we use a range of different golf balls in practice and on the course, how can we expect to be at our best when it comes to feel for distance control. Jordan Spieth stated that the most important area he thinks players should concentrate on with putting is speed and when I surveyed players with my putting score card the biggest reasons for putts missing were speed rather than direction. I always kept a dozen new golf balls to practice putting with and saved my used ones that I used for short game.
